Clinical Kirrie open up a gap at the top

-

NEWBURGH’S young side were given a lesson in finishing by Kirrie Thistle when they visited Westview Park in the North League.

Adam O’Connor put the Angus side in front before Bryan Duell took over and helped himself to another hat-trick.

Stewart Russell completed the scoring with the fifth.

With the clash between Blairgowrie and Thornton postponed, Kirrie have opened up a three-point gap at the top of the table.

Arbroath Vics lost 2-1 at home to Scone Thistle.

Thistle broke the deadlock in 15 minutes. A great through ball from Craig Mitchell found Fraser Mills, who fired it past the Vics keeper.

The lead lasted only 10 minutes as Marc Walker equalised, with a low drive from the edge of the box.

There were further chances at both ends before the break but no further goals. The early stages of the second half continued in the same vein with both keepers making fine saves.

Thistle were reduced to 10 men in 78 minutes after Craig Mitchell was shown a red card after a second caution.

With the game edging into injury time, Ben Moffat scored the winner for Thistle, who finished with nine men after Willie Laing was red-carded in the final minute of stoppage time.

RESULT of the week — Downfield got back on track with a 3-1 win at Haddington.
