BMW leaves road in two-car smash

- BY ADAM HILL AND HANNAH DOLMAN

The incident took place on the northbound carriageway at 7.30am.

A black BMW came to rest high up the embankment, facing the wrong direction, while a silver Mini Cooper was also damaged.

Police closed one lane of the northbound carriageway between the Emmock Road and Dalziel Road junctions. The lane reopened shortly before 9am. A police officer in attendance at the scene said: “We attended a two-vehicle collision around 7.30am. There were no casualties. We are now making the area safe.”

One eyewitness said she saw flashing lights as she was driving south into Dundee. She said: “I got closer and I could see a black car high up the banking on the opposite side of the carriageway.

“Goodness knows how it got there. It was also facing the wrong way, back down into Dundee, so it must have been going quite fast to have careered off the road like that.

“There were people walking about on the banking but I couldn’t see if anyone seemed hurt.

“There was a lot police activity and a lot of people about.

“It was causing a lot of traffic on the other side of the road and all the way into the city.”

Following the crash, traffic was slow moving on the A90 in both directions, while congestion built up at the junction between Forfar Road and the Kingsway.

Another person who saw the crash said: “There was a black BMW right up on the embankment and a silver Mini Cooper further along.

“The drivers must have been a lucky escape because it looked really bad.

“You could see the tyre marks on the grass and if it had happened a few seconds later they would have crashed into the steel barrier.

“It was lucky it happened where it did because there is a grassy embankment — a bit further along there is a concrete wall and a steel barrier.

“When I drove away, there were still police at the scene.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland attended the A90 near to Powrie Brae, Dundee, at 7.30am this morning following reports of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

“The northbound lane is now open.”

EMERGENCY services were called to a crash on the A90 just outside Dundee today which left one car on an embankment.
