service is provided, thereby reducing delivery times and vehicle mileage.”

The application states that 10 vans would operate from the store, making up to 66 deliveries each a day, depending on distances. This means 660 customers a day could be served from the Dundee hub.

The agent’s letter also said the store would “meet the trend” of more people ordering home deliveries, adding: “The store has the potential to significantly reduce travel associated with food shopping.”

Dundee-based Scottish Conservative MSP Bill Bowman welcomed the potential for extra jobs and added: “Sainsbury’s expansion plans should be hugely welcomed.

“It could prove to be a real boost to Tayside and its surrounding areas.

“Most proposals that bring potential business and jobs to Dundee ought to be considered.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “There is a growing demand for online grocery shopping and we’re keen to ensure we can deliver a great service by expanding our operation.

“Dundee is one of our key online fulfilment stores, and will serve a relatively wide area. As well as Dundee, we’ll serve as far as Montrose in the north and also to Perth.

“If successful, we’d be looking to implement this as soon as possible in 2017. We would recruit accordingly as our operation grows.

“We look forward to the outcome of the application.”
