Dundee streets in line for a parking overhaul

- BY JAMES SIMPSON AND HANNAH DOLMAN

TWO streets in Dundee could be set for a parking overhaul.

The proposals — for Perth Road in the West End and Forthill Road in Broughty Ferry — are set to go before the council’s city development committee.

The council has proposed removing the yellow lines on a section of Perth Road, just west of the West Park Road junction, in a bid to free up spaces for residents.

The double yellows, installed last August, have posed a headache for residents.

Margaret Laing, 69, was in full support of the lines being removed and said: “There was no issues prior to the double yellow lines being installed.”

The Perth Road resident said it had “got to the point” where she was having to park on Norwood Crescent, about 300 metres away.

Fellow Perth Road resident Lewis Fyall, 51, said he was still in “disbelief” that they were installed in the first place, adding: “The problem is that we have limited off-road parking.

“Most families now have more than one vehicle as well. Prior to the lines being installed there was no issues with traffic and parked vehicles. I think the road is wide enough to cope.”

Martha Lawson, 74, a kitchen supervisor, raised concerns that an increase in parked vehicles could pose a problem for on-coming traffic.

She added: “The yellow lines are there for a reason. Most people have driveways.

“I think they should remain in place.”

West End Councillor Fraser Macpherson said a number of residents had raised concerns with parking in the area, adding: “Since the school (Harris) has come back, there has been an issue with parking around the peak times of folk dropping off and picking kids up. “This has had an impact on local residents being able to access parking spaces. “There have been plans submitted to remove the double yellow lines just west of the school.” Meanwhile, Broughty Ferry Councillor Kevin Cordell backed the proposed changes in the Ferry, which include increasing yellow lines on an area of Forthill Road, just outside the primary school. He said: “I’d welcome any proposals if they help alleviate traffic issues along Forthill Road beside the school.” A council spokeswoman said: “This will be discussed by the city development committee in due course.” Kevin Cordell
