Fife flying high after Storm loss

FIFE Flyers travelled to Altrincham on Saturday and came away pointless after a 7-3 defeat from Manchester Storm.

That seemed to inspire them as they faced titlechasi­ng Belfast Giants in Kirkcaldy last night where they recorded a welldeserv­ed 9-5 win in a tantalisin­g contest that had the home fans rocking in the aisles.

In Altrincham, Flyers lost the opening goal after only three minutes when Patrik Valcak found the net.

Fife’s Jamie Wilson was given two minutes for cross checking on 13 minutes and Mario Trabucco doubled his side’s advantage with a powerplay goal.

Mark Heatley added a third goal on 28 minutes and then a double from Darian Dziurzynsk­i on 32 and 39 minutes effectivel­y sealed the game as Storm took their 5-0 lead into the final stanza.

Ryan Dingle pulled a goal back for Flyers on 43 minutes but further goals from Taylor Dickin and Alex Harding opened up a 7-1 lead for Storm.

Although Fife pulled two goals back through Philippe Paquet and Matt Sisca in the dying seconds, it was purely cosmetic.

In Kirkcaldy last night, Flyers took the lead against Belfast after three minutes through Brendan Brooks.

Giants levelled on 13 minutes with a strike from David Rutherford but the home side regained their one-goal advantage through Justin Fox just one minute later.

Chase Schaber picked up a pass from Russ Moyer to make it 3-1 going into the middle third.

Two minutes after the restart, the home fans were celebratin­g again when Ryan Dingle netted a fourth for Fife.

Michael Quesnele pulled a goal back for Belfast on 33 minutes and. two minutes later, Fife’s James Isaacs sat out a two-minute minor. On the powerplay, Blair Riley brought the game back to 4-3.

Giants levelled with just over two minutes remaining in the period with a goal from Colin Shields.

They then took the lead when Riley scored but Dingle levelled.

Paquet, Brooks, Moyer and Schaber added goals to register a superb victory for Fife.
