Man tells of plane crash land drama

- BY BRYAN COPLAND

A DUNDEE man has told of the dramatic moment the plane he was travelling on crash-landed in Amsterdam.

Gary Campbell was on the Flybe service from Edinburgh yesterday when its landing gear collapsed on landing at Schipol Airport (pictured inset) yesterday afternoon.

No one was hurt in the incident, although passengers were said to have been left shaken.

The flight had initially been delayed on its departure from Edinburgh as Storm Doris battered the country with high winds and heavy snow.

Posting on social media upon his arrival in the Dutch capital, Mr Campbell said: “Oh, the plane has crash landed. Jeez.”

Accompanied by photos of emergency services attending t he scene, Mr Campbell later posted: “On a bus now. Lots upset. Some hurt. Nothing seems serious re injuries.

“All the kids in ambulances and adults now all on buses. Weather terrible, lots (of) wind obviously which is the reason for the crash.

“Wheel fell off because we bounced a few times.

“Wing landed on runway. Lots of burning smells.

“Quickly evacuated onto runway. Staff did very well. Everyone did well to abandon their bags.”

Mr Campbell said afterwards that the severity of the incident had started to sink in, adding: “In a holding area.

“Everyone being interviewed about how they are feeling. Next of kin being contacted. Feeding and watering us all.

“All our bags still on plane which is lying on its side on the runway. Long day.”

In a statement, Flybe confirmed that no one had been hurt in the crash, involving a Bombardier Q-400 aircraft.

Last night, the airline’s CEO Christine Ourmieres-Widener said: “Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew.

“Our pilots regularly train for situations such as this in simulators at our training academy in Exeter.

“Our cabin crew are also fully trained to deal with these situations professionally.

“We have sent a specialist team to offer assistance to the investigation and we will now do all we can to understand the cause of this incident.”
