Abertay whaling lecture

-

THE Abertay Historical Society’s next evening lecture will be held on International Women’s Day, Wednesday March 8.

Matt Ylitalo from the University of St Andrews will be giving a talk entitled Women and Whaling in Nineteenth-Century Dundee”.

The event has been arranged in conjunction with the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum.

Matt said: “Scholars have dubbed nineteenthcentury Dundee a ‘woman’s town’.

“While Dundonians readily associate women with jute mills and political activism, few would associate them with Dundee’s whaling trade.

“Yet archival records indicate this was very much the case.”

The talk will be held in the Zoology Museum in the Carnelley Building at the University of Dundee, starting at 6.30pm.

Refreshments will be served after the event, which is free. Because of the venue’s size the society has asked those wishing to attend to book a place via the university website.
