City slickers too good for Caledonia Ladies

-

A goal in each half was enough to earn Dundee City all three points in their league opener against Edinburgh Caledonia Ladies at a sodden Charlotte Street.

City got off to a strong start with much of the play in the visitors half, although a final ball was lacking.

The deadlock was broken, however, when Laura-Anne Johnston picked up the ball on the right flank and delivered a dangerous ball into the box which was diverted into the net by Kirsty-Leigh Hunt.

Edinburgh Caledonia responded with a spell of pressure and almost equalised when a powerful effort

CARNOUSTIE crashed back off the crossbar as City struggled to clear from a corner.

The pitch had become very heavy by the second half with much of the play bogged down in the middle of the park.

Chances were passed up by both teams before Laura-Anne Johnston sealed the win with a low clinical strike.

Player of the Match was midfielder Jayne Digby.

Dundee City travel to face another Edinburgh team this Sunday, with Hutchison Vale Development the opposition.

Meanwhile, Dundee United Women kicked off their SWFL1 North season at home to Aberdeen Ladies U/23 at the GA Arena.

United had the first chance when Tammy Harkin drove through the midfield and was fouled 30 yards out. She stepped up to take the kick but her shot was well held by the keeper.

Aberdeen replied immediately with a swift attacking move that saw Becky Cameron save a long range effort.

On the 15 minute mark, United threatened when a cross just eluded Derrian Gollan.

Then Cameron did well to tip a fierce shot round the post.

In 35 minutes, United struck their first league goal of the season.

A brilliantly weighted pass out of defence from Laurie Denney found Megan Robb, who showed composure to slot past the advancing keeper.

Then Leia Swan intercepted a goal kick 35 yards out and lifted the ball over the helpless keeper to make it 2-0.

With 48 minutes on the clock, United added their third goal and it was another cracker.

An excellent pass from Denney set up Caine to cross. Gollan dummied the ball and it fell directly at the feet of Harkin who lashed the ball home from 15 yards out.

This great start to the second half got even better on the 50th minute mark when McFadyen played in Gollan. The livewire striker let the ball run across her body and fired home a shot.

Aberdeen enjoyed some midfield possession but the impressive United back three of Denney, Oliphant and Burns restricted them to long range efforts.

On the 90-minute mark, Aberdeen grabbed a consolation goal.
