Tayport’s Premier hopes suffer blow
THE Saturday hoodoo struck once again when the vast majority of the weekend junior programme was wiped out by waterlogged pitches.
However, one or two sides did manage to see some action, among them Broughty Athletic, Tayport and St Andrews in their respective leagues.
Tayport were cast adrift in the Premier League promotion race as they lost to Kennoway Star Hearts for the second time this season by the odd goal.
The Canniepairt side fell behind after only three minutes when Kyle Wilson controlled the ball on the edge of the box and calmly slotted home past Gavin Sorley.
The lead lasted only seven minutes, however, as ’Port drew level when Gary Sutherland planted a header into the net from a Jamie Mackie corner.
There was little between the sides for the next 50-odd minutes but the game swung in Kennoway’s direction with three goals in the space of 15 minutes.
Midway through the second half Scott Young gave the visitors the lead when he rammed home from two yards out and, five minutes later, Liam Rolland volleyed in a third.
Worse was to follow for John Ovenstone’s side when Kennoway increased the deficit to three goals when a tap-in from Matty Gay made it four in 81 minutes.
It looked game over but a late ’Port rally saw them score twice in the closing minutes and almost snatch a draw.
Sutherland scored the home side’s second from a tight angle and, with five minutes to go, Sutherland blasted in another from an Alan Tulleth free-kick to complete his hat-trick. In the dying minutes, Sutherland had a shot blocked and Tulleth saw a free-kick deflected for a corner.
However, there was to be no dramatic leveller and, while there was obvious disappointment in the Tayport camp, their opponents were celebrating after the win sees them take over as league leaders.
MONTROSE Roselea romped to a 10-0 victory away to Forres Thistle to keep their hopes of promotion to the North Super League very much alive.
