Captain fantastic sets example in United win

-

DUNDEE United Women made the journey up the A90 to face Forfar Farmington U/23 and returned with a 3-2 league win.

United took the lead in nine minutes — and it was a fantastic finish from captain Fiona Mearns.

Kirsty Oliphant played a lovely ball out of defence to Derrian Gollan, who turned brilliantly to feed Mearns. Fiona superbly controlled the ball with her chest then smashed home past a helpless McKay.

A big feature of United’s play saw the front two of Gollan and Mearns pressing high and not allowing the Forfar backline any time on the ball.

In the 19th minute, Forfar’s Moreland played a great pass to Davidson who cut inside and lashed in a shot which Becky Cameron did very well to hold.

Forfar were pushing for an equaliser, and another shot from Davidson sailed past Cameron’s left hand post.

The home side continued to press. However, some great defending involving Eirinn McCafferty, Laurie Denney, Leia Swan and Chloe Robertson saw United safely clear.

In 29 minutes, Stacey McFadyen played a great crossfield pass to Robertson who won a corner. From it, Mearns headed just wide.

In the 37th minute, United had a great chance as Oliphant made a brilliant defensive interception and fed McFadyen.

Stacey passed to Gollan who darted through on goal and rounded the advancing McKay, firing in a shot only to see a Forfar defender recover well and divert the shot wide.

Forfar pulled the game level in 57 minutes when a great run and shot by Kilcoyne was parried by Cameron only for Shillitto to follow up and finish.

However, with 60 minutes on the clock, United regained the lead as McFadyen dinked a ball over the top for Gollan to run onto. She kept her composure under pressure to fire past the Forfar keeper.

With 68 minutes gone, United went 3-1 up. The energetic McCafferty sent over a fantastic cross for Mearns to bullet home a header.

In 73 minutes, the visitors’ Emma Sommerville won a crunching tackle in midfield and fed a great ball to Mearns who in turn released Denney on the right wing.

Denney did well to win a corner which was taken by Robb. Mearns won possession and laid off to Sommerville, who shot wide from 25 yards.

With the game looking likely to finish 3-1, Forfar were handed a lifeline when Mearns fouled Kilcoyne in the box to give away a penalty. Mearns was booked before Kilcoyne composed herself to fire home the spot-kick into the roof of the net past a helpless Cameron.

This Sunday, United welcome Falkirk Women to the GA Arena (4pm) in another league fixture.
