Spowart’s a six-shooter as Celts eye league title

- BY ANDY SCOTT

CELTIC Boys are gearing up for a demanding stretch of games to close the season in the U/13s Cafe Royal League, as they lead the way with an eye on the title.

An emphatic 9-1 win over mid-table Dundee United SC saw the side nourish a healthy goal tally and maintain their three-point gap over challengers Fairmuir.

Striker Liam Spowart completed a stunning double hat-trick, while Imran Madugu also contributed to the flurry.

Club official Eddie McPake said of the match: “It was quite a convincing win for us.

“We were on top from the start and the scoreline reflects that. It was a really good performance from our boys.

The Bhoys currently top the table with 26 points from 11 games, l osing only once and drawing on two occasions.

However, breathing space is still hard to come by at this stage of the season, as the side look over their shoulders at a host of competitive and ambitious teams.

“The season has been a very good one for us,” McPake reflected.

“Looking back at the two games we drew, we probably should have won them.”

With a free week to look ahead to, coinciding with the Old Firm clash, attention will shift to preserving their status at the top of the table.

The Celts will have to make full use of their home advantage in two crucial crunch matches against chasers Forfar and Fairmuir.

Both sides remain unbeaten in the league, and Fairmuir are closest with two games in hand available to turn around a three-point deficit.

Celtic Boys’ only loss of the season came at the hands of Forfar — another unbeaten side, trailing the lead by 13 points but boasting a seismic six games in hand.

“Forfar are a good side,” McPake acknowledged. “We’ve only lost once and it was when they beat us 2-1.

“Looking ahead we’ve got nine games still to play, and I think we have to win them all to clinch the title.

“We are still to play Forfar and Fairmuir at home, and if we get results against them then the league is ours to lose.”
