Shocked by ‘annihilation’ at city park

-

I HAVE never felt a need to write a letter to highlight a point in my 50 or so years in Dundee.

But I’ve been forced to over the blatant disregard shown at Den o’ Mains, Caird Park.

The Den o’ Mains is to be a part of the citywide redevelopment with a new sports hub and a path upgrade from Sustrans Scotland.

Several weeks ago forestry operations were started. On my usual walks taking in the red squirrels, deer, foxes, buzzards, sparrow hawks, kingfishers etc, what I saw can only be described as total annihilation.

Trees cut down with chainsaws and bushes ripped from the ground with heavy equipment.

After a week the place went quiet, no bird songs, no deer, no squirrels, no nothing, just the sound of the machinery working away.

I contacted the council who said the work was for the path upgrades. I contacted the Forestry Commission. They took details and said they would get in contact with Dundee City Council and get back to me. This has not yet occurred.

The council harks on about how Dundee has an attractive and sustainable natural environment where the built heritage is valued and protected.

The work undertaken in the Den o’ Mains shows no regard for this. The past work on the Den o’ Mains (which has been none for 20 years) also shows that blatant disregard.
