Weekend of mixed fortunes

-

FIFE Flyers took two points in an impressive 3-1 win over Braehead Clan in Kirkcaldy on Saturday.

However, they were soundly beaten by the new league champions, Cardiff Devils, in Wales last night.

In Kirkcaldy on Saturday, Flyers took the lead after 15 minutes with a powerplay goal from Chase Schaber, with Clan’s Scott Aarssen sitting out two minutes for slashing.

Flyers looked very comfortable in the middle session, despite being outshot by Braehead.

Just as it looked as though they were going to take their lead into the final period, Clan levelled the game on 37 minutes with a goal from Stefan Della Rovere.

Seven minutes into the third stanza, Braehead’s Scott Pitt was given two minutes for tripping and, on the resultant powerplay, Matt Sisca put the home side back in front.

With one minute remaining in the game, Clan pulled goalie, Mikhal Zajkowski, in favour of the extra skater as they pressed for the equaliser but it was Fife who broke free to score into the empty net through Russ Moyer to seal a 3-1 win.

Last night in Wales, the home side took the lead with just over two minutes left in the opening period when Patrick Asselin made it 1-0.

Joey Haddad made it 2-0 four minutes into the middle session and, on 35 minutes, Chris Culligan made it 3-0.

Seconds into the final stanza, Chase Schaber pulled a goal back for Flyers but the new champions regained their three goal advantage through Andy Hotham just two minutes later.

Scott Hotham then scored a fourth on the powerplay after 45 minutes with Sebastien Thinel sitting out a two minute minor for too many men.

Devils completed the scoring on 49 minutes with a counter from Layne Ulmer to give the Welshmen a 6-1 win to start the title celebrations in front of their own fans.
