‘I love it in Dundee’

- BY CIARAN SHANKS

Scottish singing star Horse McDonald, originally of Newport, is gearing up to perform her one-woman show in the city.

Careful, her autobiographical play, comes to the Gardyne Theatre after a highly-acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe last year.

Despite coming from the other side of the bridge, Horse says she “loves it in Dundee”.

The show tells of Horse’s childhood growing up in 1970s Lanark where she was subjected to violent and homophobic abuse as well as other tales from throughout her life.

Horse, born Sheena McDonald, is no stranger to the City of Discovery having played numerous gigs during a career spanning more than two decades.

But she says fans can expect a very different performance tonight — and she’s more than prepared for a few tears.

“I’ve come to expect both men and women to be sitting in tears during and after the show. Maybe my story is not the same as others, but people can certainly empathise with it.”

Careful was penned alongside Los Angeles-based writer Lynn Ferguson and directed by Maggie Kinloch.

A reference pack has also been created on the back of the play’s success to be used in schools and workplaces.

Horse, 58, rose to prominence in the early 1990s and is recognised as one of the most accomplished singers to have emerged from Scotland.

She hopes the Dundee crowd will be able to take a positive message from the play.

Horse added: “I love it in Dundee, it’s like family there to me. I’ve got a few great friends there and I really love it.

“There’s such great things happening in the city and I have been coming to the Rep for years throughout my career.

“There are a lot of positive things in the play, it’s not all doom and gloom, there is a light at the end of it.”

DESPITE the telling of a sometimes harrowing tale, it won’t be all “doom and gloom” in Dundee tonight.
