Sweet success at Cuikie for Gowfers

- BY JUNICUS

ANOTHER fine performance from Carnoustie saw them leave Penicuik with the points after a 2-0 Super League victory.

It’s never easy to pick up points at Penicuik but the Gowfers stuck to their game plan and fully deserved the win.

They took the lead through a Sam Simpson penalty four minutes into the second half and Robert Urquhart slipped in a second just after the hour mark to double their advantage.

Although the hosts came back at them, the Gowfers held out fairly comfortably.

Jeanfield Swifts and Lochee United cancelled each other out at Riverside Stadium, with the game finishing 0-0.

Each team had chances but two of the better ones fell to the Perth side which forced fine saves from Bluebells keeper Mark Fotheringham.

After 20 minutes he produced a diving save to deny Steve McManus, then, just after the hour mark, a Keith Dewar lob looked net-bound until big Fonzy rose to tip it over the bar.

Lochee’s best effort came from Kevin Buchan when he flashed a header just past.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men after 70 minutes when Paul Lunan was sent off.

Broughty Athletic found struggling Newtongrange difficult to shake off and, in the end, were happy to settle for a point at Whitton Park

The Fed started brightly enough with Shaka Roy and Jamie Winter threatening the visitors’ goal.

However, it was the Lothian side who broke the deadlock in 24 minutes thanks to a smartly-taken free-kick.

But, four minutes later, it was all square again when a Broughty corner was headed into his own net by a Star defender.

Then, in 32 minutes, after good work by Stewart McConnachie and Ryan Suttie, Roy prodded home to give the home side the lead.

The visitors were awarded a penalty a minute later but Iain Ross preserved the Fed’s lead with a fine stop.

Despite the penalty miss, Newtongrange had by far the better of the second half and equalised in the dying minutes.
