Saint celebrates landmark appearance with goal

-

ST JOHNSTONE’S Liam Craig celebrated his 300th game for the club with a goal as they beat Inverness Caley Thistle 3-0 in the Highlands.

His strike came from the penalty spot.

Steven MacLean had the Perth men one up at the break and Craig’s 89th-minute strike was followed by an even later one from Graham Cummins.

It was a foul by Carl Tremarco on Cummins that led to the Saints spot-kick.

Saints boss Tommy Wright saw his team round off the week with a second win, following their midweek triumph over Hearts.

He was pleased his side went for the jugular following the dismissal of the home side’s Larnell Cole for two yellow cards nine minutes from time.

Tommy said: “The sending-off took them by surprise.

“It’s a difficult situation they’re in. They were trying to get back in the game after going one behind when they were reduced to 10 men.

“That can be soul-destroying and we capitalised on that.

“They dropped their levels a wee bit and maybe thought the game was over. We had to make sure it was and we did.

“I’m really pleased with the performance. We had to defend set-pieces and balls into the box and the most pleasing thing was, after the sending-off, we were ruthless.”

Saints went into the game without the suspended Richard Foster and Danny Swanson and the injured Keith Watson, Ally Gilchrist and Chris Kane.

Foster and Swanson will be available for Saturday’s home fixture against Aberdeen but the three injured players won’t make it.
