Gowfers aim to put Bluebells in place

- BY JUNICUS

CARNOUSTIE have a score to settle with Lochee United when the pair clash tomorrow at Laing Park in the Super League.

When the pair met at the start of the season, the Bluebells celebrated their return to the top flight with a comfortable 3-0 win.

The Gowfers’ disappointing start to the season continued as they failed to pick up a single point in their first seven matches.

But a remarkable transformation has taken place since the start of October last year for the Laing Park club and they now sit joint sixth in the table, having lost only twice in their last 16 matches.

Lochee will have different i deas, however, and will be keen to point out they are only two points behind their rivals but have three games in hand.

Carnoustie had eight players missing for last week’s game at Penicuik but still overcame the handicap and returned with an excellent 2-0 win.

Manager Alan McSkimming hopes to have a number back for this week’s clash but will make a late selection.

Lochee boss George Shields will show little change from the side that drew 0-0 at Jeanfield but will again be without Connor Birse and Graham Hay.

Meanwhile, with one eye on the future, Carnoustie have added former St Andrews manager Phil McGuire and Michael Spence to their backroom staff to assist with the development of the club, particularly community youth football in the area.

League leaders Kelty Hearts are next up for Broughty Athletic at Whitton Park.

It’s a tough ask for Keith Gibson’s side, who lost 3-1 when they last met.

The Fed go into the game on the back of a poor performance last week against Newtongrange where they were lucky to escape with a 2-2 draw.

Gibson will await fitness reports on Grant Lawson and Danny Cavanagh before naming his squad but Paul McLellan is back in training and could feature.

Jeanfield Swifts host Newtongrange Star in a crucial basement battle.

The visitors are second bottom, two places below Swifts, five points worse off and have played two more games.
