Dundee role in national tourney

-

DUNDEE’S men’s volleyball team travelled to Wishaw last Saturday for an invitation tournament with teams from the Scottish Junior Mens’ programme.

Their first game was against a young ‘Blue’ team featuring some of the top junior talent in the programme.

Blue’s star hitter, Ed Oldbury, was the big threat to the Dundee side and he lived up to the billing with big scores.

Dundee’s experience and control were equal to the ‘Blue’ attack and Dave Bonnar and Craig Goldthorpe both scored big points to help win the first set 25-15.

Mike Cowrad and Jamie Salvin joined in during the second set with points from service and both sides of the court to maintain their momentum to win the second set 25-21 to secure a 2-0 win.

Next up was the ‘Red’ team with intermediate players comprising former junior and potential senior players.

Both sides traded points in the first set with Coward, Salvin and Colin McEvoy all contributing pints for Dundee. But the youngsters forged ahead to take the set 25-21.

Reds then brought on two full internationalist and their power and experience told with Dundee having little in reply as they lost the second set 25-15.

The Dundee side completed their schedule against a very young ‘White’ team and their experience told with Mike Coward scoring nine points as they won 2-0 (25-21, 25-15).

The focus turns to the ladies as they complete their National League One programme tomorrow.

The visitors to Craigie High School are Edinburgh Jets and Caledonia West.

Both sides are ahead of the Dundee side and occupy the top two positions in the table.

The action starts at 10am with Jets the opposition followed by West at 12 noon.

The home side will be without Lana Edgar and Natasha Melville due to work commitments.
