Lochee has been going downhill fast
AS Lochee hurtles to oblivion, people are now beginning to ask questions and demand action.
I have lived in Lochee for 65 years and have witnessed the lies told to successive generations.
Lochee was always self-sufficient. We did not rely entirely on the jute mills — we had a dairy, a fish cannery and hundreds of family businesses.
Where did the foundation stone for Westminster come from? Quarries in Lochee.
It was reported in the Tele that £250,000 is to be spent revamping Dawson Park. Not so long ago it was reported that Baxter Park had been restored to its “Victorian splendour”.
Lochee Park has had nothing spent on it. In 1952, tennis enthusiasts built the tennis court and changing rooms themselves.
The railings were removed during the Second World War, so what about Lochee Park getting them back now?
When Lochee became part of the Dundee Corporation in 1922, we were its “cash cow”, helping to pay for the Caird Hall and Lochee Road.
Why did Dundee College move to Broughty Ferry, causing financial hardship to students?
Why move Menzieshill High School to the new Harris Academy, causing financial hardship to children from working class housing? They used to walk to school in the morning, go home at dinner time and then walk back to school. Great exercise — but they can’t do it now. They have to take the bus.
Tesco decided to move out of Lochee and head to the outskirts of town, leaving behind a community that had served them well.
It is all part of Lochee’s demise.
