Missed chances so costly for Pansies

- BY JUNICUS

BROUGHTY Athletic and Tayport will contest the final of the GA Engineering Cup after both won their respective semi-finals on Saturday.

Broughty had a narrow 2-1 win over Violet but the result was a bit cruel on the Pansies after they dominated for most of the first half.

Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t convert their dominance into goals.

The Fed looked a different side in the second 45, however, and their grip on the game was rewarded with the opening goal just after the hour mark when Ryan Suttie pulled the ball back for Stewart McConnachie to fire home from just inside the box.

The visitors then added a second in 84 minutes when Danny Cavanagh swept in a cross from Paul McLellan.

Violet made the Fed sweat with a headed goal from Ben Middleton in the last minute of normal time but Keith Gibson’s men held out to win a place in the final.

They will be joined in the final by Tayport, with the Fifers enjoying a fairlycomfortable 3-1 win over Kirrie Thistle despite finishing the tie with 10 men.

The opening goal came in 15 minutes when an Alan Tulleth pass found Jamie Mackie and his shot found the net.

Four minutes into the second half, the Fifers added a second with Tulleth rifling a free-kick into the Kirrie net.

Two minutes later it was tie over for Kirrie when Tulleth raced clear and clipped the ball over the advancing keeper.

There was still time for a bit of drama, however, with ’Port being reduced to 10 men in 53 minutes when Mackie was sent off for handling in the box.

Bryan Duell made no mistake from the resultant penalty.

Thistle gaffer Jim Finlayson said: “There was no lack of effort but we just never reached our usual high standards.”

Jeanfield edged past Penicuik 0n penalties in the East of Scotland Cup.

Two second-half goals by Tony Holt seemed to have Swifts well on the road to victory. But the hosts hit back to take the tie to a shootout, with the Perth men holding their nerve to win 7-6.
