Jeanfield survival hopes are boosted

- BY JUNICUS

JEANFIELD picked up a massive three points in their bid to beat the drop from the Super League with a 1-0 win over Carnoustie at Laing Park.

It was all the more impressive considering the Perth men had to play the final 20 minutes with 10 men against a Gowfers side who have now lost their last three games.

After a goalless first half, Jeanfield were awarded a penalty when John Anderson was pulled down in the box.

Tony Holt made no mistake from the spot. Minutes later, Anderson picked up his second yellow card and was sent off but the Perth side held out and picked up three vital survival points.

There was disappointment for Lochee United when their six-game unbeaten run was ended by relegation-threatened Newtongrange Star at Thomson Park.

From the start, Nitten showed that bit more desire with a Jack Wilson shot going just wide then a Gary Hamilton header from a corner flashed past the post.

Lochee rarely troubled the visitors’ goal in the first half and lost a goal just on half-time with Hamilton having better luck when he powered in a header from another corner.

The visitors started the second half again on the attack and they doubled their advantage in 55 minutes when Kyle Lander prodded home following a free-kick.

The Bluebells huffed and puffed as they looked to get back in the game and they almost snatched a point in a dramatic finish.

Scott McComiskie headed home from a corner in the l ast minute then, two minutes into stoppage time, he almost won his side a point when his angled drive hit the post.

But Nitten deservedly held out to take the points for their third win in a row as they continue their battle to avoid the drop.

A woeful display from Broughty Athletic saw them slump to their biggest defeat of the season when they were hammered 6-1 at home by Broxburn.

Paul McLellan got Whitton Park side’s consolation goal 20 minutes from the end.
