Breakdown and smash see delays in Tayside

- BY JON BRADY

TRAFFIC on two of Tayside’s major routes was brought to a halt today following an accident and a breakdown during rush hour.

A one-vehicle collision at 7am on the A90 between Perth and Dundee at Kinfauns led to long tailbacks on the eastbound carriageway.

Morning traffic was reduced to a single lane as police and fire crews carried out investigations at the scene of the incident.

One eyewitness, who was commuting from Perth towards Dundee at the time and passed the scene, told the Tele: “The traffic was queued right back from Kinfauns towards Perth.

“It looked as if both the lanes had been blocked by an accident.

“We got through a short time after but it caused a fair amount of delay to drivers.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters had been called to an accident, adding that one vehicle was involved but no one was trapped.

The crew was stood down shortly afterwards.

The incident had been cleared up just after 8am.

Traffic Scotland updated motorists via social media, saying: “E/B Kinfauns RTC (road traffic collision) is now clear from the carriageway. Traffic now moving well.”

Meanwhile, motorists in and around Perth also faced disruption after a broken down van blocked a main route.

Motorists travelling north on the M90 were delayed at junction 10, just south of the Broxden Roundabout.

The obstruction caused mile-long tailbacks along the motorway, stretching back towards the Friarton Bridge slip road.

And although the van was moved off the carriageway within an hour, Traffic Scotland warned that passage through the area would still be slow for the rest of the rush hour.

The incidents came as roadworks on the outskirts of the Fair City continue to cause motorists problems.

Work is taking place on the A9 between the Inveralmond and Broxden roundabouts.

The roadworks started i n l ate February and are in their second phase.

Contraflows and road closures have been put in place along the 2.5-mile stretch of dual carriageway, and will carry on until the end of June.

The purpose of the works is to support the construction of a culvert under the dual carriageway for the Perth Lade.
