One day to go before

- BY LINDSEY HAMILTON

Decisions are going to have to be made by city residents and at the Tele we have been bringing you a full list of all the candidates standing for all 29 council seats in Dundee.

We have also taken a look at the main areas for concern in all the city wards,

Today, we bring you what you need to know for the two remaining wards — the East End and The Ferry.

The East End will play a crucial role in what happens in Dundee as a whole for generations to come, with what’s happening at the Port of Dundee set to have a huge impact on the city.

As part of the Tay Cities Deal, it is proposed to turn the port into the UK’s main hub for oil and gas decommissioning.

If successful, this could create thousands of skilled jobs in Dundee and deliver an almost unimaginable boost to the city’s economy in the process.

For voters in the East End, however, there are more immediate concerns.

The ward takes in a number of densely populated areas, including Linlathen, Douglas and Craigie, among the poorest areas of Dundee.

When it comes to the vote tomorrow, the SNP will be confident in returning Will Dawson, the city development convener, and Christina Roberts, the current depute lord provost, to the City Chambers. However, the third seat will be up for grabs. It was previously held for Labour by Lesley Brennan, who was elected on the second count, but she has decided to step down.

Margaret Richardson will be hoping to retain the seat for Labour but with nine candidates standing, it could be closer than the 2012 results.

The Ferry ward takes in Balmossie, Barnhill, Panmurefield Village and Broughty Ferry.

A recent review by the Boundary Commission looked at splitting the ward in two.

However, the move was halted after a public campaign by concerned local residents who didn’t want the area split.

Residents in The Ferry have a strong community council which helped spearhead the campaign against the changes.

THERE’S now only one day to go until the people of Dundee take to the polls to decide who is going to lead them for the next five years.

Other issues include parking, school provision and planning and development management.

Nine candidates will contest the four available seats in the ward.

There are two from the SNP, two Conservative and one each from Scottish Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens, Dundee Against Cuts/TUSWC and UKIP.

The current leader of the SNP administration, Ken Guild, is standing down as a councillor for the area after more than 30 years in politics and more than 10 as SNP group leader.

Also standing down is Laurie Bidwell. He is Labour’s education spokesman and has sat on Dundee City Council for more than 10 years.

SNP councillor Vari McDonald, who currently represents the West End, is standing along with Tory brothers Derek and Phillip Scott.

Derek is currently Dundee’s only Conservative councillor.

Angela Lyall is standing for Scottish Labour, Craig Duncan for the Lib Dems, Calum Walker for UKIP, Pol Clementsmith for the Green Party and Paul Johnson for Dundee Against Cuts/TUSC.

William Morren is standing for UKIP in the East End ward but failed to respond to a request for information.
