YourVoice New bins causing upset across city

-

DUNDEE City Council’s recent changes to the bins and refuse collections have upset some readers. Here are some of the viewpoints and an answer from the council.

TURNING the corner from St Andrews Street into Seagate, I was brought to a sudden halt.

One large green bin and six small black ones blocked my path. I had to wait for people to pass by in the opposite direction as there was not enough room on the pavement.

This is not an isolated case. Dundee has never been so messy and smelly because of bins left on streets.

I AGREE with D.W.B., it could not be a more unsightly mess. Some bins are on the street when the pavement is more than wide enough and some bins are on the pavement where there is little room. There is rubbish at the back of tenements in the bins there and the bins are still in use and overflowing.

I phoned the council to ask about this and was told “they should not be using the old wheelie bins and they will be emptied sometime in the future when we get around to them”. I was also told the Eurobins at tenements would be emptied twice a week.

The whole process is one ungodly mess, I don’t think a proper assessment has been made. I would ask councillors what information they got when voting for this and what they were not told. I would also like to know the cost.

N.S.W.E.

WOULD it not have made more sense to have kept at least four grey bins for each block of flats and put in a burgundy and green bin?

This would have worked better than having the Eurobins cluttering our pavements and roads.

I know some people left their grey bins out on the pavements but they were less of an obstruction than the numerous cars now parking on our pavements due to the lack of parking spaces.

Another worry is the fact we have two grey bins for 24 flats and are only getting them emptied once every two weeks, which is going to lead to rubbish lying on roads and pavements.

I don’t think the council has really thought this out. Hopefully things will settle down.

Worried.

AFTER up-ending one of our new grey bins for the new collection system, to sort out long slivers of glass that someone had carelessly thrown in, I discovered these had been made in Germany. Is this where all our new bins come from?

Curious.
