ROUND-UP Kelburne and students win top honours

-

THE Scottish club domestic hockey season is complete with Bromac Kelburne men and Edinburgh University Ladies both the undisputed top teams in Scotland.

They have won the National Leagues and Scottish Cups and, at the weekend, the Scottish No 1 team places in 2018 European competition

In the games for the Euro places, Kelburne men required penalty shootouts both days with a 3-1 penalty win over Western Wildcats on Saturday after a 2-2 draw, then, on Sunday, for the top place, a 2-1 penalty win over Grange following a 3-3 draw.

The ladies top team, Edinburgh University, had a more decisive couple of days with a 6-1 win over Western Wildcats on Saturday then a 5-1 win over Milne Craig Clydesdale Western on Sunday.

Grange men and MCC Western Ladies take t he second place entries in Europe 2018 as they both would have done on the basis of league positions.

In the games for the second promotion places to Divisions One, the men’s move up goes to Inverleith who were second to Dundee Wanderers in the Division Two title race. Wanderers promotion as Division Two winners was automatic as was GHK from the Ladies Division Two.

For the ladies, the second promotion place to Division One, goes to Grange EL who had finished second and had a penalty shoo-out over Erskine SM on Sunday in a play-off game.

Midland men’s scores have been difficult to collect. This is something the Midlands Union must remedy for next season.

It had also become a problem with National League results, not helped in the SHU case by a poor scores reporting arrangement.

Midland Division One scores included Wanderers II beating Madras 7-1 with Bobby Ralph netting five. There was also one goal each from Mike Warden and Greg Pearson.

Perthshire II had a 5-0 walkover Dundee University II, Wanderers IV lost 3-0 to Harris II and Monarchs had a 2-1 win over Menzieshill IV.

In Division Two, Monarchs III conceded to Harris III. That is a 5-0 score. Other results included Perthshire III 5 Menzieshill V 3, Perthshire IV 8 Menzieshill I V 1 and Perthshire IV 8 Menzieshill V 1.

With the title races near completion, and only two more scheduled weekends for both Divisions One and Two, matters could be resolved on Saturday for Division One and Sunday for Division Two.

In Malaysia, at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, the GB men’s squad emerged as winners in a seven goal thriller against Australia on Saturday and became the first team from the UK to win the title since England in 1994.

Scotland’s Alan Forsyth opened the scoring in the eighth minute, with his fourth goal in the tournament. Other GB scorers were Goodfield (2) and Willers with GB always ahead.

As GB had lost 2-1 to Australia in the round-robin games, the title success was even sweeter.

The Scotland men’s head coach, Derek Forsyth, was the GB assistant coach. Other teams i nvolved were New Zealand, Malaysia, India and Japan.

The Harris FP AGM is in the Dundee West Church Hall this Saturday at 10am.

Dundee Wanderers’ AGM is on June 5 in the glasshouse at Dundee High School Sports Centre from 7pm.

The Scottish AGM is at HQ in Glasgow on June 10 from 11.30am. Nominations for president and vice-president are required by May 19

The Monarchs AGM is on June 14.
