Fine showing but City bow out

-

DUNDEE City bowed out of the 2017 Women’s Scottish Cup at the firstround stage after a battling performance against First Division Granite City in Stonehaven.

Despite the home side being a division above, City had the better of the opening exchanges.

However, a golden chance to take the lead was missed as Stephanie McLean fired over.

However, City’s hard work was rewarded when Lauren Gray scored a from a 25-yard free-kick.

The second half was a much scrappier affair and City were struggling to offer enough support to their forward players on the large 3G pitch.

Keeper Kathryn Davidson made a super save with her left foot as Granite City’s sidelines celebrated what they thought was a goal.

However, the home side levelled in the 70th minute with a neatlydinked shot from close range.

This galvanised them as they pressed for a winner.

City continued to have chances with Laura Boag hitting the post with a header, Amanda Primrose working the goalkeeper and Jayne Digby volleying a shot over the bar.

However, a break up the park following a Dundee City corner saw Granite take the lead with around 10 minutes remaining before a late goal made it 3-1.

Dundee City can hold their heads high and take plenty positives from the hard working show as they return to league duty this Saturday at home to Forfar Farmington.

JEANFIELD Swifts welcomed East Fife to the artificial turf at McDiarmid Park for the first meeting of the sides in SWPL2.

Jeanfield started the stronger of the two sides.

Their pressure paid off after 15 minutes when Jade McDonald intercepted a goal-kick and set up Eilidh McIntyre, who turned and fired past the keeper.

McIntyre doubled the home side’s lead after 27 minutes.

The second half saw East Fife try and force their way back into the game, forcing Corrie McIlravey-Davidson into a fine one-handed save from a free-kick a minute in.

Corrie also made a fine save later on to end a stramash in front of her.

Jeanfield kept pressing and created a few chances that should have been converted.

The points were sealed, though, i n the 68th minute when a McGinley corner fell to McDonald, who was able to stab the ball home from j ust inside the six-yard box.

Manager Jason McCrindle was pleased with the team’s effort. They got the result their play merited and victory sees Jeanfield move up to fifth place.
