lice are parasites that live in hair, while nits are the empty egg cases attached to hair that the insects hatch from.
This is a common problem, particularly in school children aged four to 11 years old.
Head lice are largely harmless, but can live in the hair for a long time if not treated and can be irritating and frustrating to deal with.
Treatments to get rid of head lice and nits are available to buy from pharmacies, supermarkets and online.
You don’t usually need to see your GP.
However, it’s very difficult to avoid catching head lice in the first place.
Lotions and sprays are no prevention and should only be used if a live louse has been found in your hair.
