Fears over road

Appeal for action on speeding motorists

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

A DUNDEE woman is calling for action before someone “loses their life” on a road.

Joanne Bonella, 40, from Mid Craigie, intends to launch a petition seeking traffic calming measures to prevent cars travelling at speeds “in excess of 60mph” along Happyhillock Road.

She said she was “confident” residents would support the introduction of an extra set of traffic lights or speed humps on a stretch of road near Midmill Road.

The mum-of-four said a speed hump system, similar to that which has been introduced in Douglas, would have a “significant impact” on reducing the number of accidents.

It comes after a car was involved in an accident with a child on the road on Tuesday night.

On that occasion, the girl suffered only minor scratches and did not require any more treatment, and there is no suggestion the driver was at fault.

Joanne said: “Fortunately the girl was OK but it won’t be too long before someone loses their life.

“I’ve lived here for 26 years and every couple of months there have been incidents — kids, pensioners or animals involved in collisions with vehicles.

“I’ve seen cars travelling at speeds in excess of 60mph. There are traffic lights next to the shops but it would be good to have something installed further along near the Midmill Road area beside the bus stop.”

Joanne said the idea of introducing further restrictions in Happyhillock Road had been talked about for as long as 25 years.

She said: “I remember attending a meeting in the community complex with my mum way back regarding more traffic lights being installed. Nothing further came of it.

“There were roadworks here recently and we hoped they were maybe putting in speed humps but they just relaid the road, moved the bus stop and installed one of those traffic islands. Given what happened on Tuesday night, it isn’t enough.”

The Tele reported that a 15-year-old girl was seriously injured on the road in January last year.

Joanne added: “It would make sense to have something similar to what Douglas has done in introducing speed humps — it has had a significant impact.

“It is a busy stretch of Happyhillock Road and I’m confident I would have the backing of fellow residents if we were to start a petition.”
