‘It’s been awesome’
The five-day festival, which started on Thursday, attracted visitors from as far away as London, with people keen to see what attractions were on offer in the City of Discovery.
This year’s theme — Factory Floor — acknowledged the global shift in design practice where designers and makers are blending forms of production.
The city’s illustrious industrial heritage has been highlighted as the inspiration behind the event, with three galleries hosting a programme of design-inspired exhibitions, talks, film screenings, live performances and family events.
Festival producer and curator Sion Parkinson was overjoyed with the festival, saying there had been plenty of activities for children and adults.
Speaking to the Tele, he said thousands attended a variety of events over the past few days, adding: “It’s been year is the amount of time people have stayed for.
“There were some people who stayed for up to five hours, as there were so many activities going on throughout the day to entertain children and adults.
“A lot of work has been organising workshops providing people a chance to see behind the scenes and how things are made.”
Last year’s i naugural festival attracted more than 7,000 visitors and the festival’s curator expects numbers to be even greater this year.
Sion said: “We have had people from across the country visiting with some from London and Manchester — that was really flattering.
“The demographic of people here is totally different to any other festival across the country.
“People in Dundee, along with those in other parts of the UK, are really curious about what is happening in the city and they are keen to know what Dundee is about.”
THE organisers of Dundee Design Festival say this year’s “awesome” event has “exceeded expectations”.
