Ross could be others want

- By TOM DUTHIE

FOR the second time in just two months Dundee are on the hunt for a new manager.

With candidates already identified, it looks unlikely to be a long search and St Mirren boss Jack Ross is currently tipped to take the post.

There are other quality candidates, though, and tonight we take a look at the main ones.

Jack Ross

Now very much the front runner but a note of caution — so was Neil McCann a few days ago.

The fact, though, that Dundee have sought permission to speak to the 40-year-old is a clear indication of how highly they rate him.

Taking over at Dens Park would be something of a homecoming because 25 years ago Ross spent a season as a youth player there.

From Dens he moved to Forfar, also at youth level, and when things didn’t work out at Station Park, he dropped down to junior level back in his home area with Camelon.

He returned to the senior ranks with Clyde in 1999 and as a journeyman pro would go on and have spells with Hartlepool, Falkirk, St Mirren, Hamilton and Dunfermline.

It was as a coach that Ross really started to make his mark. He was No 2 to both Alan Adamson and Ian Murray at Dumbarton and after a brief spell in the youth set-up at Hearts became a manager in his own right just two years ago at Alloa.

Results there earned him the St Mirren job, where he succeeded former Dundee boss Alex Rae, last October. His first game in charge, incidentally, was a 2-0 home loss to Dundee United.

Now Ross back is on Dundee’s radar and while his lack of experience would make his appointment something of a gamble, in the game he is considered a man with a very bright future.

Jim McIntyre

A man who down the years was so often the scourge of Dark Blues fans because of his habit of scoring important derby goals against them as a striker with Dundee United.

The 45-year-old had a decent playing career with Bristol City, Exeter, Airdrie, Kilmarnock, Reading and Dunfermline as well as the Tangerines.

As a manager McIntyre has topflight experience, having been in charge at that level at both Dunfermline and current employers Ross County.

In between those jobs he was at Queen of the South, where he teamed
