Praise for Children’s Hearings volunteers
VOLUNTEERS supporting the Children’s Hearings System in Tayside were praised for their commitment, as national Volunteers’ Week Scotland was under way.
In Tayside, around 190 Children’s Panel and Area Support Team members give their time to make a vital contribution to the lives of troubled and vulnerable children and young people, and Boyd McAdam, the national convener of Children’s Hearings Scotland added his thanks for all they do.
The recognition of their commitment comes ahead of this year’s recruitment drive, where more than 500 new Children’s Panel members of all ages and backgrounds will be sought.
Most recent figures highlight that across Scotland 15,329 children and young people were referred to the Scottish Children’s Reporter administration in 2015/16, resulting in 34,896 Children’s Hearings taking place.
The system, which deals with troubled or at risk children and young people who are in need of care or who have offended, relies on the generosity, skills and commitment of those who volunteer — like Amanda Burnett, 46, from Dundee. The paramedic has been a panel member for 10 years.
She said: “When my youngest child started school I wanted to do something voluntary where I could make a difference and help people.
“The transferable skills you gain are endless. For me, being better able to listen to and support children, young adults and families has helped me greatly.
“I also believe I have gained skills that help me in my personal life and have made me a better parent.
“The Children’s Panel is a big commitment and it can be challenging at times but you are providing positive guidance to children and that makes it all worthwhile.”
