Compensation for attack victim
A MAN who left his victim unconscious with a broken ankle has been ordered to pay compensation.
Derrick Duncan, 36, of Kinghorne Road, was ordered at Dundee Sheriff Court to pay £500 to Stewart Gorrie.
The court heard Duncan attacked Mr Gorrie at 3.45am on May 2 last year as he walked home from a night out at Dundee University Students’ Union.
Fiscal depute Colin Wilson told the court the incident happened at the junction of Old Hawkhill and Balfour Street.
The fiscal said: “The accused approached him and punched him on the face.
“He fell to the ground and became unconscious, suffering injuries to his knee and ankle as he fell.
“The accused ran off towards the Globe Inn.”
Police were made aware of Mr Gorrie lying unconscious on the ground. He was taken to Ninewells Hospital where he received treatment for a broken ankle.
Duncan was later detained and admitted in court that he had assaulted Mr Gorrie.
The victim later told the Tele that the attack haunted him, adding: “It was a totally unprovoked attack and I guess I’ll always be left asking ‘why me?’”
As well as the compensation, Duncan was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work in the community and placed under 18 months’ supervision.
