Resident charged over fires at flats

- BY BRYAN COPLAND

Jacqueline Baxter, 46, was arrested by officers after the blazes took hold “over a number of days” at a block in Lamb’s Lane, Stobswell.

It followed an investigation by Police Scotland and the city council into the alleged fireraisings.

The Crown Office confirmed today that Baxter had appeared in court over “a number of wilful fire-raising charges”.

The case was continued for further inquiries and she was released on bail.

No further dates for her court appearance have been set.

The incidents came to light in a report by Chief Superintendent Paul Anderson to councillors, updating them on police activity throughout the city between January and March this year. The report was due to be discussed by councillors at a meeting today.

Ch Supt Anderson also highlighted a number of other activities by police in relation to public protection and safety.

He said officers had carried out a number of presentations on internet safety to youths at colleges and high schools in Dundee.

Police Scotland also joined forces with the charity Addaction to speak to pupils about drug use.

Another focus was tackling bogus workmen and online scams. Meanwhile, Ch Supt Anderson highlighted officers’ work in domestic abuse, saying that the force continued to “work towards increasing the public’s confidence to report domestic abuse”.

Specialist officers in the domestic abuse taskforce have investigated historic abuse reported to police.

Figures for 2016/17 showed that there were 2,259 domestic abuse incidents reported to police — a 4.1% drop on the previous year.

But just under half of those resulted in a crime being recorded.

Of the crimes i dentified, almost three-quarters of them were detected — where the case was solved by police — a drop from more than 80% i n 2015/16.

A WOMAN has been charged with starting six fires in the Dundee tenement block where she lived, it has emerged.
