Award for work with cadets

FLIGHT Sergeant Scott Ross has received the Lord Lieutenant’s award f or meritoriou­s service from the Lord-Lieutenant of Angus, Mrs Georgiana Osborne.

Scott j oined t he Air Training Corps as an adult member of staff, as sergeant, in January 2009, at 2365 (Brechin) Squadron.

Later that year he transferre­d to 2422 (Arbroath) Squadron and, in January 2013, was promoted to the rank of Flight Sergeant, assuming command of the squadron in 2014.

The Lord Lieutenant said: “Scott is an experience­d, dedicated and highly enthusiast­ic youth leader. Under his leadership the squadron has taken the lead in the local community, especially in June 2016 at the Arbroath Festival of Heroes, where he not only organised the attendance of more than 100 cadets, but also served on the committee responsibl­e for planning and managing the entire event.”

Scott is also a leader in North East Scotland Wing events, and organised their participat­ion in the 2016 Royal I nternation­al Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford.

Barrhead Travel has reported the big rise in the number of people electing to go on cruises rather than jetsetting to different corners of the globe — and said the firm has seen a surge in cruise ship bookings from 2016.

Dundee-based Ramsay World Travel has also seen an upsurge in cruise bookings of 30%.

Karen Musgrave, of Barrhead Travel, said: “Cruise-lovers have been taking advantage of the convenient cruise and maritime summer sailings from Dundee allowing them to explore the beautiful Fjords and Baltics right from their doorstep.

“We were delighted to see that Dundee sailings were up 227% from 2016 this summer, with 2018 sailings already in demand and selling out fast.”

Holidaymak­ers in the city have been booking up flights, too, with people keen to escape for sunnier climates abroad.

Ramsay World Travel has reported sales rising 18% year on year.

The USA, Spain and Dubai are some of the most popular destinatio­ns.

Sales manager Gregor Miller said: “The destinatio­ns that are proving most popular are Florida, Las Vegas and New York.

“We are 62% up for bookings to Dubai, which may be down to a new theme park opening there recently.

“There has also been some new flights from Scotland to Spain that have been very popular, including Santander, Vigo and Valencia.”

THERE has been a surge in the number of Dundee holidaymak­ers setting sail — with a travel agent revealing cruise ship bookings are up as much as 227% from 2016.
