Closure ‘big blow’ for city

-

A CITY centre retailer’s closure has been described as a big blow for Dundee.

The Disney store i n Murraygate which has been open for nearly 20 years is set to close on Monday July 3.

Customers were informed of the closure on Friday after a sign was put in the window by staff.

City centre councillor Ken Lynn has spoken of his disappointment.

He said: “There is no way to put a gloss on this, it’s really not good news for the city centre.

“The store must have been there for 20 years or so — it’s a very much established outlet in Murraygate.

“It’s a prime spot i n Dundee and I would have hoped Disney would have stuck around. I just hope another retailer spots its potential soon.”

Despite the closure, Cllr Lynn believes it shouldn’t be too much of a concern for other businesses.

He added: “The store is one of a kind and very unique in what it sells so I don’t think it should worry other businesses in the city centre too much.

“I can only imagine the store is not trading as well as it used to and perhaps online purchases have played a f actor i n t he closure.

“It just means we have to redouble our efforts to make sure the city centre is an attractive place for retailers t o come and open.”

The Disney Store had not responded to a request for comment as the Tele went to press.
