Three but not so easy as Jeanfield progress

-

JEANFIELD Ladies welcomed SWFL1 side Westerlands to McDiarmid Park’s Fieldturf in the second round of the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup.

The Perth side, who are in SWPL2, reached the quarter-finals last season and were looking to progress to the next round and did so by a 3-0 scoreline.

Their intentions were clear with Rhee Tweedie hitting the post after 10 minutes.

Westerlands however, made it difficult for the Perth side to get any clear shots on goal in that first half.

They twice scared the home lot with a Melanie Woods free-kick crashing down off the crossbar and bouncing on the goal-line before being cleared. Shortly before half-time, a Claire Sneddon shot struck a post from all of 25 yards.

Six minutes into the second half, Rhee Tweedie latched onto a great through ball from Emma MacLean to open the scoring beating the keeper at the near post.

In the 63rd minute, Eilidh McIntyre extended the lead with a brilliant strike from 35 yards that left the keeper standing.

Rachel Todd and Mhairi Morrison went close before Eilidh McIntyre made it 3-0 in the 87th minute.

Head coach Jason McCrindle was pleased with the result

“Last year we had a great journey, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time.

“The objective against Westerlands was just to get to the next roun.

“Credit to Westerlands, they made the first half difficult for us. They were well organised and compact and tried to break us down. However, once we got the goal we looked more relaxed.”
