Low in dark over Dens Park future

- BY GEORGE CRAN

The former Aberdeen midfielder has been on loan at the Irish side since January but will return to the Dark Blues at the end of this month.

That still leaves time for him to feature in Derry’s Europa League first qualifying round first leg against Danish side FC Midtjylland.

That away leg is to be played next Thursday with Low’s deal finishing up on the Friday.

And taking to Twitter, Low revealed to fans he is still unsure over what will happen.

When asked if he was staying at Derry, Low replied: “Not too sure, will know more this week.

“Loan ends 30th. Still don’t know what’s happening, should know by Friday.”

The rest of the Dundee squad return to Dens for testing tomorrow as their summer break comes to an end before pre-season proper begins on Monday.

Whether new manager Neil McCann wants to keep Low at Dens remains to be seen but it is clear Derry boss Kenny Shiels is keen to see him stick around at the Irish club.

He said: “We are making progress, he knows where we stand and we need to get an answer pretty quickly.

“It’s difficult to plan ahead when you haven’t got the detail of who’s going to stay.

“I am hopeful and, although I don’t want to count my chickens, I feel like there is a good chance he will stay until the end of the season.”

At the moment, Derry are more than halfway through their League of Ireland campaign.

That finishes at the end of October and with the Candystripes still well i n contention for a top-three finish and another spot in the Europa League for next year, Shiels sees Low as an integral part of plans should he stick around.

Since joining Dundee from the Dons two years ago, Low has had real struggles with injury.

That’s meant he hasn’t been able to nail down a regular first-team place leading former Dens boss Paul Hartley to send him out on loan. In his time in Ireland, those injury worries have eased with him playing 14 of 18 league games.

DUNDEE midfielder Nicky Low is still in the dark over his Dens Park future as his loan deal at Derry City comes to its end.
