Pilots picture brought back memories

-

I WAS delighted to see the Back in the Day photograph in the Evening Telegraph featuring the Hong King cadets who trained at Dundee with Tayside Aviation (TA).

Regarding what became of these lads I can tell you that only one of this (the first) course did not complete the 60-hour flying course at Dundee.

The rest all completed flying training and either became helicopter or fixed wing pilots with the (then) Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force (RHKAAF) which became the Government Flying Service (GFS) in 1992 prior to the take over of HK by China in 1997.

One, West Wu (kneeling on the wing) became the chief pilot of the GFS.

I visited HK for the disbandment ceremony of the RHKAAF in 1992 and was taken around some of the islands in a helicopter flown by Michael Ng who is behind West Wu in the photo. I have lost touch with these former cadets but one of the TA instructors does keep in touch.

I sold Tayside Aviation in 2007 but was asked by the new owners to continue as director of flying (now part time) and hope to continue until February, which will be the 50th anniversary of Tayside Aviation.

Thanks again for including this picture.
