Green light for new Kingsway crossing points

CONTROVERSIAL proposals to install two sets of traffic lights on one of Dundee’s busiest stretches of road have won the backing of city councillors.

Members of the council’s city development committee yesterday gave the green light to two new pedestrian crossings on the Kingsway.

They will be situated between the Forfar Road and Old Glamis Road junctions.

However, despite concerns by motorists that the lights will cause major congestion at peak times committee convener Lynne Short gave an assurance that drivers will notice very little difference.

While asking drivers to be patient, she said: “The lights will only change if there are pedestrians there to make that happen.

“We are a society which is always in a hurry but bear in mind we don’t have to rush through life.

“It’s good news because it’s the opportunity for safe travel from the ward into Caird Park or if you want to go to Morrisons then there is that safe way of getting there.

“We already have something similar at Clearwater in the Broughty Ferry area.

“It’s very good because it’s all about making our streets safer.”

The crossings would be added at Graham Street and Mains Loan, using a share of Scottish Government’s Cycling, Walking and Safer Streets (CWSS) funding.

The council sees t he Kingsway as a “major barrier” for cyclists or pedestrians wanting to travel to the north or south of the city.
