Night to remember for 11,000 Little Mix fans

- BY LINDSEY HAMILTON

It was a night to remember for the thousands of Little Mix fans who braved the elements to watch their pop idols in Dundee.

A day of rain, wind and temperatures that struggled to get into double figures did nothing to dampen the spirits of the 11,000 who packed Slessor Gardens for one of the biggest concerts the city has ever seen.

Preparations had been going on for months, culminating in a lastminute flurry of activity this week as the stage was put up and Slessor Gardens was turned into a spectacular arena.

The gates opened at 5pm but the crowds had begun arriving as many as four hours earlier.

Fans even managed to catch a glimpse of the singers as they arrived to stay at the city’s Malmaison hotel ahead of the show.

Several streets were closed off and traffic was rerouted causing some delays during the evening rush hour.

Armed police were out and about in the city centre to protect revellers as security was beefed up — but a spokesman for Police Scotland said today there didn’t appear to have been any problems for officers to deal with.

Ella Eyre and Australian band Sheppard opened the show before Little Mix appeared about 8.45pm.

Among the first to arrive was the Petrie family from Fintry — mum Leona along with daughters, Ellie, 14, Aimee, 12 and Erin, seven.

Leona said the family had been planning their attendance since the start of the year.

She said: “We bought our tickets back in January when they first went on sale and the girls have been excited ever since.

“They are all dedicated Little Mix fans and it’s Erin’s first concert so she is especially excited.”

Friends Bobbi Barron, 17, from Douglas, and Becky McKay, 17, from the Hilltown, were dressed for the weather in plastic ponchos — and said they had followed the group for years.

Becky said: “I’ve been a fan ever since they got together on X Factor.

“We bought our tickets in January and we’re so excited to be here.”

Bobbi added: “It doesn’t matter what the weather does, we really don’t care — we’re just having such an amazing time.”

Leigh Donnat, 17, from the Hilltown, was at the concert after getting tickets for her birthday in February.

She was joined by four pals, including Charlotte MacQueen, 19, from Stobswell, who said they were all out to have a great night whatever the weather, adding: “We’re just so excited to be here.”
