Youth climbs 40ft on to roof of school

- BY STEVEN RAE

A YOUTH has been caught on camera climbing 40 feet on to the roof of a school in Dundee.

The photo — which was taken on Friday night — shows a youngster on the roof of St Vincent’s RC Primary School in Pitkerro Road.

One witness said he was part of a larger group of children who were spoken to by police at the time.

The woman, who lives in Glenconnor Drive, said youths accessing the building out of hours was a constant problem.

She said: “There are folk on the roof all the time, every night at the moment it feels like.

“It’s usually younger ones — kids messing about.

“I saw them on Friday night, the police were there — well, I saw one officer — but he just spoke to the group of them and then walked away.

“I don’t know if he saw the young lad on the roof or not.

“That must have been about 7pm but he had been on the roof for a while when the policeman arrived. “It’s worrying that someone will fall and be seriously hurt or worse, they could be killed.

“It’s usually children from around this area I’ve seen on the roof.”

Councillor Will Dawson, whose East End ward includes the school, said he feared such actions could end in tragedy.

He said: “Roofs are obviously dangerous places and only people with the relevant clearance, training and safety equipment should be on the roof of any building. Not only is there the risk of a fatality but there could also be damage to the structure.

“I am unaware of other incidents of this type recently.

“But if this is a youth on this building, then there could have been fatal consequences from being somewhere he obviously should not have been.

“If any member of the public witnesses behaviour such as this, then they should immediately phone the police.

“I would also ask that if anyone knows who this is that they come forward with the name so that if this were an unauthorised access to the building that the relevant action can be taken.”

Police Scotland was approached for comment but had not responded at the time of going to press.
