Bowyer named as Charlton assistant manager

-

LEE Bowyer has been appointed as Charlton’s assistant manager.

The former England midfielder made his breakthrough as a player with the Addicks in the 1990s, before embarking on successful career that took in the likes of Leeds, Newcastle and West Ham.

Now 40, Bowyer returned to Charlton on a temporary basis in January but boss Karl Robinson has moved to promote him.

“It feels great to be asked to do this and to work alongside Karl and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Bowyer, who played 58 times for Charlton.

He added: “It was an easy decision to make. We worked closely towards the end of last season so I know the ins and the outs and it’s felt a bit like a homecoming because there are a few faces who are still here from when I was a kid.

“I have a lot more experience now that I can pass onto the lads. I’ve worked under a lot of good people in my career and Charlton is where it all started, so it’s a bit of a fairytale for me.”

Experienced midfielder Johnnie Jackson has also joined Robinson’s staff.

The club captain, who has made 261 appearances for the Addicks, has said the forthcoming season will be his last.

ALEXANDRE Lacazette is set to join Arsenal in the coming days for around £44million, according to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

The France striker has been linked with a move to the Gunners for much of this summer as they seek to lift themselves into Premier League title contention.

Aulas said: “The transfer of Alexandre Lacazette to Arsenal could be completed in a day or two.”
