Pub demolition bid

- BY ADAM HILL

A FRESH bid has been launched to demolish one of Dundee’s most iconic pubs.

The long-closed Jimmy Shand in Dickson Avenue, Menzieshill, could soon be razed to the ground, according to plans lodged with the council.

Neil Findlay, based in Burton-uponTrent in England, has applied for a building warrant from the local authority for the “full demolition” of the building.

The work could go ahead later this year, with a decision expected on the proposals as early as July 25.

It’s the latest in a line of plans that have been put forward for the derelict site.

In 2011, an application was submitted for the venue to be knocked down and two new units to be built, but that was refused by the local authority.

The decision was appealed but that was also thrown out.

In 2012, the site was declared “at risk” — but the building has remained standing ever since.

It was later sold as a freehold by Punch Taverns.

No details have been revealed over plans for the site should the building disappear.

A raft of complaints have come from locals in recent years, who have called for the “eyesore” pub to be demolished.

The building has become a target for vandals and has been hit by graffiti on several occasions.

Today, local residents backed the demolition plans.

Marshall Gorrie, 70, said he thought the idea was “marvellous”.

He said: “I think that is the best way forward, to level it. It is really good news for me.”

Mr Gorrie added that he thought the land could be put to better use.

He said: “I would want to see houses being built or something like that.

“They built new houses around the corner, so someone could buy up the land and build some.

“I think that would be the best use of the land.”

His wife, Maureen, 71, said: “I would back the plans to demolish it.”

Jim Stewart, 70, a retired NCR buyer, said: “It’s a great idea.

“They should do something useful — they could make it a car park and people who work at Ninewells Hospital could use it.”
