‘Frightening’ speeds

- BY ADAm HILL

Locals on Balgillo Road in Broughty Ferry today blasted motorists and motorcyclists who travel above the 30mph speed limit on the route.

George Strachan, 65, a taxi driver from the area, said the problem was at its worst at the weekend.

He said: “They come flying down the road when people are walking about — it is only a matter of time before someone dies.

“Someone is going to be killed — it is boy racers driving down the road. It is frightening to think about. Something needs to be done before it is too late. People are going 50 to 60mph when it is only a 30mph zone.”

Mr Strachan believes the drivers were avoiding a police lay-by — which has been installed between Panmurefield and the East Balgillo Roundabout — and using the road more as a result. worker adding that she was unable to sleep at nights due to the noise coming from revving engines.

She said: “I hear them flying along the road when I am in my bed. It could be a danger to people who are crossing the road. I don’t know what they could do to stop it from happening. They could maybe put up more 30mph signs and people would maybe be less likely to break the limit.”

Zena Farmer, a 60-year-old retired social worker, said: “It is a very fast road and it really worries me because it is also a very busy road.

“It is a big road, a long road and a fast road. I thought that they could maybe put in speed bumps but then there is also the problem of whether that would cause more noise.”

A council spokesman said: “The number of serious road accidents in Dundee is consistently low but we are in no way complacent and use as many ways as we can of reminding drivers not to speed.

“We are currently reviewing any accident reports in the area to determine the need for road safety improvements.”

RESIDENTS on a speeder-hit Dundee street say it is “only a matter of time before someone dies”.
