James is Fife winner once more

- BY JAMES MASSON

DUNDEE Hawkhill Harrier James Donald loves running in Kirkcaldy.

He won the mile race along the Esplanade, following on from successes in the two mile race at Ravenscraig Park and the five kilometre event at Beveridge Park. He holds the record at both courses.

James also ran well in Bedford, finishing sixth in the English Championships three kilometre race.

He will be back in England next month when he takes part in the English 10 kilometre championships in Manchester.

The 18-year-old has been with the Hawks since U/15 level.

COLIN Jackson has called for patience in the wait for successors to Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill as British track and field superstars.

Ennis-Hill has retired from athletics while Farah, her fellow Olympic gold medal winner, is to end his track career after next month’s World Championships in London.

Middle distance runner Laura Muir, a double European champion, has been successful but few other athletes from these shores are capturing the imagination.

Jackson insists they will emerge but only by being allowed to develop in their own time.

“You can’t really call right now who will be the next Jessica Ennis-Hill or Mo Farah,” said Jackson, Britain’s former 110 metres hurdles world record holder who was speaking at a TDK coaching clinic in north London.

“Ten years ago, before Jess and Mo came on to the scene, you couldn’t really have called them becoming the stars they are. A lot of our athletes are still developing.

“When Jess started winning Commonwealth and European medals, you thought ‘OK, let’s see where the improvements are going to come’.

“It was the same with Mo, he did the double in Barcelona and you knew he could improve on certain things.

“He took the next step by going to the United States to train, everything was set up beautifully for him, and then he became a global superstar.

“That’s how it happens, but right now we need time and patience”
