Stereophonics to play at Caird Hall
LEGENDARY Welsh rockers Stereophonics are set to play at Dundee’s Caird Hall next month, it has been announced.
The band, who shot to fame in the 90s with hit albums Word Gets Around, Performance and Cocktails and Just Enough Education to Perform, will play in Dundee on August 22.
Formed in Wales in 1992, they are one of only eight groups to have released five consecutive UK number one albums.
Other groups to have done so are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, ABBA, Genesis, Oasis, Blur and U2.
Stereophonics have also enjoyed 11 top 10 singles including Pick a Part That’s New, Mr Writer, Have a Nice Day and the group’s number one hit Dakota.
The band also famously covered the Chris Farlowe classic Handbags and Gladrags — also covered by Rod Stewart.
Their hits collection, Decade In The Sun, sold 1.2 million copies in the UK while they sold more than 150,000 tickets on their last 16-date UK arena tour.
With around 10 million albums sold worldwide, they are one of Wales’ most successful rock acts.
Stereophonics have been praised for their stellar live performances and they have headlined many of the UK’s most high-profile music festivals including Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury and V.
The Caird Hall tweeted that the venue would be announcing a “major” concert to be held in just a matter of weeks.
That led to a flurry of speculation over who would grace the city’s main stage.
The news also coincided with the announcement the band are due to release their latest album, Scream Above the Sounds, on November 3.
The big-name announcement comes just a week after the city’s new Waterfront venue, Slessor Gardens, hosted the last of its three successful summer shows when Olly Murs played there.
The organisers have already promised more big name acts next year with four shows potentially lined up and a rumoured return of Rod Stewart.
Tickets for Stereophonics go on sale at Dundee City Box Office on Tuesday at 9am.
There is a maximum of four tickets per person.
