King was most recently assistant manager at Broughty Athletic and previously managed and played for Brechin Vics.

That followed a lengthy career in the senior game with St Johnstone, Ross County, Livingston, Stirling Albion and Forfar Athletic but mainly at Brechin City, for whom he netted 60 goals in over 300 appearance­s during 11 seasons at Glebe Park.

’Port chairman Davie Baikie said: “We were looking for an ambitious young manager, and Charlie ticked all the boxes.

“With all his experience in the game, he’ll have the respect of the senior players in the squad and, having coached at youth level, he’ll also get the best out of our youngsters.

“He’s had a taste of the management side of the game at Brechin Vics and Broughty and is now relishing the opportunit­y to take the reins at The Canniepair­t.”

Though only an on-looker, King took in Wednesday’s 5-2 friendly win away to Cupar Hearts in which Gary Sutherland (3) and Dale Reid (2) were the ’Port scorers.

His first game i n charge will be Saturday’s home friendly with Camelon.
