Stereophonics fans get in early for Caird tickets

- BY CIARAN SHANKS

Fans eager to snap up tickets to see the stereophonics began queuing up at City square 4.30am today.

Tickets for the band’s performance at Caird Hall on August 22 went on sale at 9am both online and at the ticket office.

But dozens of fans in Dundee weren’t leaving it to chance — and got up in the wee small hours to queue for tickets.

All pre-sale briefs were snapped up for the Friday gig and the event is likely to sell out today.

Nursing student Jacqueline Spankie, from Claverhouse, was first in line at 4am this morning.

The 40-year-old said: “I’m a massive fan and I have been since the start — I love them!

“I remember first seeing them when they supported James at the SECC many years ago.

“I love the music but it’s all about lead singer Kelly Jones for me!

“It’s all worth it just to get our hands on the tickets.”

Tommy Rumgay, 45, from Forfar, also set his early alarm in a bid to secure his tickets.

He said: “Even though we had to get up very early it’s all worth it.

“Stereophonics are just a great band.

“Ever since When Word Gets Round was released I’ve loved them.

“There’s not a bad track on the first two albums.

“This will have been the fourth time I’ve seen them and they’ve still got it.

“I thought that the band might have held the gig at Slessor Gardens, but I suppose it’s all been done at short notice.

“Caird Hall is smaller but I’m sure it will be a brilliant atmosphere.”

Darren Gill, 30, from the Hilltown, arrived at City Square to snap up tickets at 7.15am.

He said: “I started listening to them about 20 years ago.

“The Stereophonics were pretty much the soundtrack to my teenage years.

“This is the first time I’m getting to see them live and in my hometown too — which is pretty special and I can’t wait.”

A spokesman for Leisure and Culture Dundee said last week that demand for the tickets will be “extremely high”.

The Caird Hall has a capacity of 2,3000.

Stereophonics are a Welsh rock band that formed in 1992 in the village of Cwmaman in the Cynon Valley.

Among the band’s most popular hits are Dakota, The Bartender and the Thief and Handbags and Gladrags.
