Lochee coach is very hopeful
LOCHEE amateur boxing club coach Jerry Howett (above) is excited about the future of some of his young stars.
Welterweight Sam Howett is leading the way with a European Junior silver medal and Commonwealth Youth Games bronze.
Several others are coming up behind him.
Jerry said: “John Reilly, who boxes at bantamweight, and welterweight Lennon Mitchell are with the Scottish High Performance squad and lightweight Ali Mahmood, a former Scottish novice and intermediate champion, is another who could have a very good season.”
Jerry’s son, Brendan, who boxes at lightheavyweight, is also looking to forge a career in football.
He has signed for Violet juniors and the midfield player is now training two nights a week with Violet as well as working out in the Lochee gym.
FLOYD Mayweather has warned Conor McGregor his confidence will count for little once they are in the ring together.
The American’s 49-bout unbeaten record is on the line against mixed martial arts star McGregor, who will make his boxing debut at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on August 26.
Irishman McGregor has claimed he will win inside four rounds but Mayweather said: “I’ve been here before and I know what it takes. It’s different being in there with Floyd Mayweather.”
