Police at schools with road safety advice

-

AS children across the city returned to school this week, Police Scotland has urged parents to think carefully about road safety.

The force is trying to make sure family members picking up and dropping off children aren’t parking on zig-zag lines and are avoiding parking in front of nearby residents’ driveways so their vehicles aren’t blocked in.

PCs Scott McEwing and Jill Dolan, of the Longhaugh Community Policing Team, have been out and about at schools in the Broughty Ferry area to pass on as much advice as possible to parents and families ahead of the new term.

Sergeant Jamie Webster, also from the Longhaugh team, said his advice to parents would be to park away from the immediate entrance of schools.

He said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to remind those who are dropping off or picking up children to think about road safety in around schools in Dundee.

“Please can I ask that you consider where you park, preferably make it a distance away from the school, and make this best practice for during the whole school term.

“Do not park on the zig-zag lines outside the school entrance — and be careful not to block driveways or other driver’s views of the road, particularly when parking near to junctions.”

Sgt Webster said motorists must reduce their speeds where appropriate when in the vicinity of schools in the city.

He added: “Drivers should always reduce their speeds in response to where they are and what is around them.

“This is never more important than when they are on roads where children are making their way to or from school.

“Slow down when at or near to schools, stay within the speed limits and pay attention.”
